Tono legal
Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 9, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Tono ("Tono," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information when you use the Tono app, website, accounts, and related services (collectively, the "Service").
1. Information We Collect
Account information
Through Sign in with Apple, Tono may receive:
- an Apple or provider-specific user identifier;
- your name, if you choose to share it;
- your email address or Apple private relay address;
- authentication information required to authenticate your account; and
- an internal Tono user ID.
Tono does not receive your Apple ID password. Apple may provide certain account information only when you initially authorize the app.
Onboarding and profile information
Tono may store answers you provide during onboarding, including:
- preferred or display name;
- age or age range;
- how you heard about Tono;
- musical goals, practice blockers, and desired outcomes;
- current ear-training level and instruments played;
- training focus and daily practice target;
- commitment level; and
- reminder preferences.
Training and progress data
Tono may collect or store:
- notes practiced, answers, correct or incorrect results, training attempts, and accuracy;
- note mastery, Pitch Map data, weak and strong notes, and note-confusion patterns;
- session history, daily practice activity, and lesson or session summaries;
- XP, streaks, gems, levels, and unlocks; and
- training recommendations.
This information may be used to personalize future training.
2. Microphone and Pitch Information
Certain Tono exercises may request access to your device's microphone so that Tono can detect the pitch you sing.
Microphone audio is processed locally on your device.
Tono does not upload, transmit, or store raw microphone audio.
Tono may store resulting training information, such as the detected pitch or note, whether an attempt was correct, mastery updates, and lesson or session progress. You can revoke microphone permission through your device settings.
3. Purchase Information
Apple processes payment credentials. Tono does not receive complete payment-card information. Tono and RevenueCat may process information such as:
- the product purchased;
- subscription, trial, and entitlement status;
- renewal and expiration information;
- transaction identifiers and a RevenueCat customer identifier;
- store and currency; and
- refund or cancellation information.
4. Device and Technical Information
Tono and its service providers may process limited technical information necessary for authentication, security, network communication, diagnostics, and app operation. This may include device and operating system information, app version, language or locale, IP or network information, and authentication or security events.
Product analytics
Tono uses PostHog to understand whether onboarding, purchases, and practice sessions work well. If analytics is enabled, Tono may collect events such as starting or completing onboarding, viewing or closing the subscription screen, purchase and restore outcomes, and starting, completing, or leaving a practice mode. Practice events may include the mode, number of questions, and number answered correctly.
PostHog assigns a random installation identifier to group events from the same installation. Tono does not send PostHog your name, email address, Tono account ID, device name or model, microphone recordings, or individual note answers. Analytics events are configured not to retain IP-address or derived location properties. Tono does not use these events for cross-context behavioural advertising.
Analytics is enabled by default. You can turn it off during onboarding or at any time under Tono → Profile → Settings → Privacy → Analytics. Turning it off stops new analytics events from being collected from the app. Previously collected events remain subject to Tono's retention and deletion practices.
If you choose to enable push notifications, Tono and OneSignal may process a push subscription identifier, an internal Tono user identifier, notification preferences, device and app information, and information about notification delivery or interaction. Tono may also send OneSignal limited training-status tags and events, such as streak length, Daily Quest progress, note unlocks, or whether a notification was opened, so that it can send relevant practice reminders and avoid repetitive messages. Tono does not send raw microphone audio to OneSignal.
Tono does not currently use advertising SDKs, behavioural ad tracking, or data brokers. Tono does not currently sell personal information or use personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
5. How We Use Information
We may use information to:
- create and authenticate accounts;
- sync progress and save Pitch Map data;
- personalize training and adapt note selection;
- track streaks and progress and provide training features;
- send and measure push notifications you choose to enable;
- restore purchases and verify subscription entitlements;
- provide support and technical troubleshooting;
- improve reliability and user experience;
- protect security and prevent fraud;
- comply with legal obligations; and
- enforce our Terms of Service.
Raw microphone audio is not used for analytics or advertising.
6. Service Providers and Disclosure
Supabase
Supabase provides cloud infrastructure such as authentication and database services. It may process user IDs, profile data, onboarding answers, and training or progress data to provide those services to Tono.
RevenueCat
RevenueCat manages subscription and purchase entitlement information, including the purchase data described above.
PostHog
PostHog provides privacy-limited product analytics and processes analytics events on servers in the United States. Tono uses an anonymous installation identifier and an allowlist of product events and properties. Tono disables person profiles, automatic screen and lifecycle capture, session recording, and GeoIP enrichment in this integration.
OneSignal
OneSignal provides push-notification delivery and related messaging services. After you choose to enable notifications, OneSignal may process a push subscription identifier, Tono user identifier, device and app information, notification preferences, limited training-status tags, and notification delivery or interaction events. This information is used for app functionality and to understand whether Tono's notifications are useful; it is not used by Tono for cross-context behavioural advertising.
Apple
Apple handles Sign in with Apple, App Store distribution, and purchases and subscriptions.
Other disclosures
Tono may disclose information where reasonably necessary to comply with law, respond to valid legal requests, protect security, prevent abuse or fraud, or establish or defend legal claims.
If Tono is involved in a future acquisition, merger, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law. This statement does not imply that such a transaction has occurred.
7. Selling and Advertising
Tono does not currently sell personal information.
Tono does not currently use third-party advertising SDKs or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
If these practices materially change, Tono will update this Privacy Policy and provide choices required by applicable law.
8. International Processing
Tono's service providers may process information outside your province or country, including in Canada and the United States. Information may therefore be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction where it is processed.
9. Data Retention
Tono keeps personal information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide accounts and progress, maintain entitlements, meet legal or accounting requirements, protect against fraud or security risks, and resolve disputes. Account and progress information is generally retained while an account is active.
After account deletion, associated personal information will be deleted or de-identified within a reasonable period unless retention is legally required. Backups may persist temporarily until overwritten through ordinary backup cycles. Apple and RevenueCat may retain transaction records according to their own legal and operational obligations.
10. Security
Tono uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. These may include authenticated access, encrypted network connections, database access controls, and user-specific authorization rules. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and Tono cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. User Rights and Choices
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information; withdraw consent; object to or restrict certain processing; receive portable information; or complain to a privacy regulator. These rights may be subject to legal limits and exceptions.
Send privacy requests to tono.learn@gmail.com. You can also revoke microphone or notification permission in your device settings, disable notification categories in Tono's settings, manage subscriptions through Apple, use Apple's Hide My Email where available, and delete your Tono account.
12. Account Deletion
You can initiate deletion through Tono → Profile → Settings → Delete Account. Deletion removes your Tono cloud account and associated progress, subject to information Tono must retain by law.
Deleting the account does not automatically cancel an App Store subscription.
Subscriptions must be cancelled separately through Apple.
13. Children's Privacy
Tono is not directed to children under 13. Tono does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without legally valid parental consent. If Tono learns that such information was improperly collected, it will investigate and delete it where required. Send related privacy concerns to tono.learn@gmail.com.
14. Changes to the Privacy Policy
Tono may update this Privacy Policy as the product changes. We will update the last-updated date and provide additional notice where legally required.
